It uses 4 D batteries, and it pumps up quickly, in about a minute. The bed is very comfortable. I give it only 4 stars because it seems to have a slow leak, and we have to pump it up again every day. Luckily it is for my son, and he doesn't mind the slight sinking he gets laying in the bed. We have a queen size of this same bed, and it doesn't leak at all, so we probably just got a fluke, but now I have to attempt to figure out where the leak in this bed is in order to repair it. I bought this twin supreme airbed, when it arrived the invoice stated the item could not be returned once opened. How do you know if it works unless you open it? Well, the first time I slept on it within 6 hours it went flat! You can't return it and this company does not stand behind their products....do not buy from them unless you want to be stuck with a mattress that does not hold air.
